As a coach, healer, or service provider, your success often lies in the details. The ability to make small, strategic adjustments—whether in your marketing, client interactions, or overall approach—can have a significant impact on your business. By regularly assessing what’s working and what needs tweaking, you gain the clarity needed to make decisions that directly support your goals.
One of the most critical areas where fine-tuning can make a big difference is in how you handle your free calls, whether they’re discovery, audit and assess, or skills-based calls. These calls are often the first real interaction potential clients have with you, so nailing the process and knowing how to tweak it can make a huge impact. If your calls aren’t converting as well as you’d like, it’s a sign that some adjustments may be needed.
If you find your calls aren’t converting at the rate you’d like, don’t stress—this is your chance to fine-tune your approach. Instead of questioning what you bring to the world, investigate why your calls aren’t leading to the results you want.
Here are three common reasons your free calls might not convert and what to do about them:
1. The Wrong People Are Booking Calls
Not every lead who books a call will be a good fit for your offer, and that’s okay. The key is to learn how to pre-qualify your leads to ensure the people who do get on the phone with you are aligned with what you offer. To help with this, use a pre-call questionnaire. This will allow you to better understand your lead’s needs and whether you’re the right person to help them. If you find a lead isn’t a good fit, you can politely decline the call, saving both of you time and energy.
(Caveat: If you’re a new coach, I recommend getting on the phone anyway to learn why your offer appealed to them—market research, anyone?)

2. You’re Firehosing the F*ck Out of Your Leads
It’s natural to want to give as much value as possible during a free call, but too much information overwhelms your leads. Instead of feeling empowered, they may leave the call unsure of what to do next. To avoid this, be clear about the goal of each call. Focus on one tangible outcome and guide the lead toward that goal. This will help them feel more confident in their ability to move forward and more likely to convert into a paying client.

3. You’re Not Demonstrating the Value Clearly Enough
Sometimes, despite having a great offer, leads don’t convert because they don’t see the clear value in what you’re offering. This often happens when you’re too focused on what you did or didn’t do during the call, rather than on the lead’s needs. To counter this, make sure you map your lead’s problem to the solution you’re offering. Show them how your service solves their problem, and ask for the sale clearly and confidently.
Being able to critically assess what to tweak and how to do it is what separates thriving entrepreneurs from the rest. Whether you’re aiming to attract more clients, improve the quality of your interactions, or ensure your offers resonate with your audience, knowing how to fine-tune your approach gives you control over your outcomes. It’s about identifying the areas that may be holding you back and applying the right solutions to move your business forward with confidence.
